Lofoten, the slow way

Red cabins on the water, white beaches above the Arctic Circle, and a sky that never quite goes dark.

Why we went

Lofoten is a string of jagged islands above the Arctic Circle, where fishing villages of red cabins sit under peaks that drop straight into the sea. This is a trip of one coastal road, white-sand beaches you can have to yourself, and a summer sky that never fully goes dark. Slow is the only way to do it right.

Lofoten rewards a loose plan and a rental car.

Base yourselves in a rorbu, the old fishermen's cabin on stilts over the water, and drive the E10 from village to village. Hike a peak for the view over Reine, brave a quick swim off a white beach, and dry your boots by the fire over cod the boats brought in that morning. The midnight sun means the day is as long as you want it.

Come with people who are happy to pull over for every view, because you will. Every place below opens straight into your Varde itinerary with a tap. Build a rough loop, then let the islands set the pace.
