Brașov, under the mountains
A few days of old town squares, castles in the hills, and the Carpathians in the background.
Brașov rewards the wanderer who likes a mountain at the end of the street. This is a few days of red roofs and Gothic spires, castles out in the hills, and long dinners of food built for cold weather, with the Carpathians always there in the background.
Brașov is small enough to feel by the second day.
Start in the old town, where the square, the church, and the narrowest street in the city are all a short walk apart. Save a day for the castles in the hills, and an evening for the cable car up Tâmpa when the light goes long. The mountains are the reason to linger.
Come with people who are happy to wander a square for an hour and call it a plan. Every place below opens straight into your Varde itinerary with a tap. Build a loose plan, then let Transylvania fill in the rest.
Where to eat
Cellars, pots, and food built for cold weather.
Sergiana
Best for A hearty first night
A Brașov institution for three decades, set in a brick cellar off Strada Mureșenilor and built for a long Transylvanian dinner. Come hungry for the grilled meats and the bean soup in a bread bowl. Book ahead on weekends, the rooms fill fast.
La Ceaun
Best for Traditional Romanian
Right on the main square, serving Transylvanian comfort food the old way, much of it in the cast iron pot it is named for. Order the sarmale, the mămăligă, and the tripe soup if you are feeling brave. Cash goes quick, the portions are big.
Bistro de l'Arte
Best for A slow lunch
Tucked on a quiet square in the old town lanes, this is the room for Romanian cooking with a lighter, modern hand. Good for a slower lunch or a glass of wine between sights. The bohemian little dining room is half the draw.
What to see
A Gothic church, a medieval square, and the castles in the hills.
The Black Church
Best for The landmark
The largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul, named for the soot that darkened its walls after a great fire in 1689. Go in for the organ and the wall of Anatolian carpets. Check the summer organ recital schedule.
Piața Sfatului
Best for The heart of town
The medieval council square at the heart of the old town, ringed with pastel facades and cafe tables under the mountains. This is the orientation point for everything else. Best at dusk when the crowds thin.
Bran Castle
Best for The day trip
The hilltop castle marketed as Dracula's, about 30 km from town, though the Dracula link is mostly legend. Go for the warren of stairs, the period rooms, and the views down the valley. Arrive early or late to beat the tour buses.
Peleș Castle
Best for The grand interior
An hour south in Sinaia, the neo-Renaissance summer palace of Romania's first king, and one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. The 160-plus rooms are heavy with carved wood, stained glass, and armor. Tickets are timed, so book the morning slot.
Râșnov Citadel
Best for The view from the walls
A 13th century peasant fortress on a hill between Brașov and Bran, one of the best preserved in Transylvania. Walk the ramparts for the long view over the valley. Easy to pair with Bran on the same day.
Where to wander
Narrow lanes, an old gate, and the cable car up the hill.
Tâmpa Cable Car
Best for The sunset view
The cable car up Mount Tâmpa, the forested hill with the big Brașov sign above the old town. Ride up near sunset for the full red roof panorama, or hike the switchbacks if your legs want it. Bring a layer, it is cooler at the top.
Catherine's Gate
Best for A bit of history
The only surviving medieval gate of the old city, a slim 16th century tower with four little turrets that once marked a right to pass judgment. A short stop on the way into the Schei quarter. Nice in the morning light.
Where to slow down
A mountain monastery and a meadow at the foot of the peaks.
Sinaia Monastery
Best for A calm stop
A serene 17th century Orthodox monastery in the mountains near Peleș, an easy and calm stop on a Sinaia day. Step into the painted church and the quiet courtyard. Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered.
Poiana Brașov
Best for The last afternoon
The mountain resort just above town, a meadow ringed by the Postăvarul peaks, good for a slow afternoon and a cable car ride. In summer it is walks and long lunches, in winter it is the local ski hill. A simple way to end the trip up high.
