La Tagliata
Best for A long no-menu dinner
A family trattoria high in the hills above Positano with no real menu, just plate after plate of whatever the kitchen made that day. The view over the town and sea is half the meal. Call ahead and let them run the table, and take their shuttle up the hill.
Da Adolfo
Best for A long beach lunch
A beach shack on a hidden cove you reach by the little boat that runs from Positano with a red fish on the mast. Grilled fish, mozzarella on lemon leaves, and chilled white wine with your feet near the water. A whole afternoon, not just a lunch.
Lo Scoglio
Best for The famous zucchini pasta
The famous family table on the water at Nerano, just around the point, and the home of spaghetti alle zucchine. Everything comes from the garden or the bay out front. Worth the drive or the boat for one perfect lunch.

An Amalfi institution since 1872, a few steps off the cathedral square, doing the coast's seafood the classic way. The fish soup is the thing to order. Book a balcony table and settle in.

The pastry shop in little Minori that put the coast's lemon desserts on the map. Stop in for the delizia al limone, a dome of sponge and lemon cream, and eat it on the seafront. The reason to make the short hop to Minori.

Villa Rufolo
Best for The classic cliff garden
A medieval villa in Ravello whose terraced gardens hang over the whole gulf, the view that inspired Wagner. Time it for the summer concert season when an orchestra plays on the edge of the cliff. The flowers peak in late spring.
Villa Cimbrone
Best for The Terrace of Infinity
The other great Ravello garden, ending in the Terrace of Infinity, a marble-busted balcony with nothing beyond it but sea and sky. Quieter than Rufolo if you go early. The walk up through Ravello is part of it.

Best for The town above it all
The quiet hill town high above the coast, built around a cathedral square that feels a world away from the beach crowds. This is where the coast goes to slow down and breathe. Come for an afternoon of gardens, music, and a coffee in the piazza.
Atrani
Best for The quiet neighbor
The tiny town next door to Amalfi, with a real working square and a fraction of the crowds. Climb to the church for the view down over the rooftops to the sea. The easiest taste of how the coast lived before the tourists.

Positano Beach
Best for A swim under the town
The main beach below Positano's tumble of pastel houses, equal parts swimming and people-watching. Rent a lounger at one end or find the free stretch in the middle. The view back up at the town is the one on every postcard.
Emerald Grotto
Best for A quick glowing detour
A sea cave near Conca dei Marini where the water glows an unreal green from light coming up through a hidden opening. A short rowboat tour takes you in. A quick, strange, lovely stop on the drive between towns.
Fiordo di Furore
Best for A dramatic hidden swim
A narrow fjord-like inlet spanned by a high road bridge, with a sliver of beach at the bottom. Park up top and walk down the steps for a swim where the cliffs nearly close overhead. Small, dramatic, and easy to miss if you blink.

Marina Grande
Best for An afternoon swim and spritz
Amalfi's own beach, right below the town and the cathedral, with restaurants spilling onto the sand. An easy place to end a day of sights with a swim and a spritz. The light goes gold here in the late afternoon.
