Best for The lobster dinner that sells the trip
The yellow awning over Bass Harbor where lobster boats unload a few feet from your picnic table. Order by the pound, add corn and a roll, and watch the fleet come in. Worth the drive to the quiet side of the island every single time.
Jordan Pond House
Best for The one line worth standing in
Popovers and strawberry jam on a lawn looking straight up Jordan Pond at the Bubbles. The tradition goes back to the 1890s and it still earns the wait. Go mid-afternoon between the lunch and dinner rushes.
Beal's Lobster Pier
Best for Lunch on the quiet side
A working lobster pier in Southwest Harbor that has been buying off the boats since 1932. Lobster rolls, steamers, and fried clams at picnic tables over the water. Quieter than anything in Bar Harbor and better for it.
Side Street Cafe
Best for A big group dinner
The Bar Harbor standby for the night nobody wants another whole lobster. The lobster mac and cheese is the order, the margaritas are the reason you stay. Casual, loud, and easy with a big group.

Best for The pre-hike breakfast
Breakfast hidden down a little walkway off Mount Desert Street, and the locals' pick for it. Wild blueberry pancakes and proper eggs Benedict before the park. Get there before nine or put your name in and walk the green.

Cadillac Mountain
Best for The sunrise that makes the trip
The highest point on the Atlantic coast, and from early October to March the first place in the country to see the sunrise. Reserve the summit road ahead, bring layers, and watch the islands light up one by one. The view is worth the alarm.
Thunder Hole
Best for A quick loud stop on the loop
A narrow granite inlet where the right wave lands like a cannon shot and throws spray forty feet. Time it for two hours before high tide on a day with swell. Between waves, the stretch of pink cliffs around it is the show.
Sand Beach
Best for The cold plunge dare
The only real sand beach on this stretch of coast, folded between granite headlands and made of crushed shells. The water rarely tops 55 degrees, which is exactly why the plunge becomes the story of the trip. The Great Head trail starts right off the sand.
Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse
Best for The golden hour photo
The 1858 lighthouse balanced on the cliff at the island's southern tip, the one from every Maine postcard. Come for sunset and climb down the wooden stairs to the rocks for the classic angle. Pair it with dinner at Thurston's ten minutes away.

The Carriage Roads
Best for A car-free afternoon on two wheels
Forty-five miles of car-free crushed stone lanes threaded through the forest, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and crossed by seventeen hand-cut stone bridges. Rent bikes in town or book a horse-drawn carriage from Wildwood Stables. The Jordan Pond loop is the classic first ride.
Agamont Park
Best for The low tide walk to Bar Island
The green above the town pier where the whole harbor spreads out below. At low tide, walk five minutes up West Street and cross the gravel land bridge to Bar Island before the sea takes the path back. Check the tide chart twice, the window is about ninety minutes each side.
Abbe Museum
Best for The rainy morning hour
A Smithsonian affiliate downtown devoted to the Wabanaki nations, whose homeland this island is. The basketry collection alone is worth the hour, and it reframes everything you hike past for the rest of the trip. Perfect for the one rainy morning.
Wild Gardens of Acadia
Best for A quiet green detour
A pocket garden at Sieur de Monts where more than 400 native plant species grow in miniature versions of the island's habitats. Ten quiet minutes that teach you the names of everything you saw on the trail. The nature center and springhouse sit right beside it.

Echo Lake Beach
Best for The actually warm swim
The island's freshwater swimming hole, a sandy crescent under the cliffs of Beech Mountain. The water runs a full ten degrees warmer than the ocean, which makes it the family favorite by August. Go late afternoon when the day trippers clear out.
Mount Desert Island Ice Cream
Best for The nightly cone ritual
The tiny Firefly Lane scoop shop that made its name on odd flavors done seriously, callery pear sorbet, blueberry basil, salted caramel with real burnt sugar. A presidential stop in 2010 and a nightly one for everyone else. Take the cone down to the town pier.
Bar Harbor Inn
Best for The splurge stay on the water
The white waterfront classic on the harbor since 1887, with a lawn of Adirondack chairs facing the Porcupine Islands. Even if you stay elsewhere, the terrace is open for a blueberry pie and coffee with the view. Book far ahead for summer weekends.
